Peggottys
About This Spot
Stepping into Peggottys feels like discovering a cherished corner of the English countryside thoughtfully gathered under one roof. Nestled in the heart of Wolsingham, this welcoming spot moves at a gentle pace—a place where time seems to slow just enough to savor simple but deeply satisfying pleasures. The air carries the comforting warmth of freshly baked bread and the subtle sweetness of treats waiting patiently on the shelves.
More than just a café, Peggottys is a lovingly curated blend of bakery, farm shop, and gourmet grocery. The atmosphere invites quiet moments spent over a cup of expertly brewed coffee, paired with delicate slices of lemon meringue pie or the kind of savory dishes that feel like a small, tender celebration of local ingredients and homemade care. It’s the kind of place that gently pulls you in for a quick refreshment but somehow encourages lingering—whether to chat with the friendly couple who run it or to pick up handmade goods that quickly become staples at home.
Space here is cozy rather than sprawling, creating an intimate backdrop where every visitor feels part of a quietly shared experience. This intimacy adds to the charm, making each visit feel personal and unhurried. While parking can take a little patience, those who arrive on foot or by bike find a calm refuge where the world slows just enough to enjoy the thoughtful, uncomplicated joy of good food and genuine service.
At Peggottys, every bite tells a story rooted in care and tradition, whether it’s the satisfying crunch of a crisp bread crust, the velvety richness of a custard slice, or the comforting embrace of a thoughtfully prepared vegetable lasagne. It’s a haven for those who treasure little rituals—a morning brew, a mid-afternoon treat, or a spontaneous stop that turns into a treasured habit.
For anyone wandering through Bishop Auckland’s countryside or looking to bring a touch of homegrown goodness into their day, Peggottys quietly holds a space where the familiar feels fresh and the everyday becomes a small celebration.

Lovely shop packed full of very high quality produce as well as some amazing fresh food, savory and sweet. And the couple running it are super helpful and friendly.

Really nice food, great coffee, excellent service. The only downsides are that parking can be difficult, there is limited space to chain your bike up outside (if you need too) and the seating area inside, although lovely, isn't massive. However, I would thoroughly recommend a visit, if you are in the area.

That thing where you’re driving home, fancy a coffee and chance upon a place. Then comes the part where you feel that a coffee and maybe a slice of cake will be enough and in you go, whereupon restraint goes out the window and as well as enjoying your coffee and cake you buy things for home, for later of course, but later is sooner, oh well. But why not, with coffee and baked goods as delicious as this (sweet and savory), and the welcome as warm, why wouldn’t you insist that restraint take a break. I thought a list of things to try might help, but gave up, everything we bought was glorious.

This is a gem of a bakery in Wolsingham. It looks high class on the outside and on the inside and the baked goods looked and tasted great! They currently have a limited menu but the home made mince pie and mushy peas were really good. The individual lemon meringue pie I had for afters was delicious, as was the custard slice my uncle had! Two mugs of tea completed our lunch for around £20 but then I spent over £30 on Neukey Broon and apple chutney, Neukey Broon fudge, coal from Newcastle ( cinder toffee coloured black) and a pack of Northumberland biscuits. A few Xmas presents sorted there! The toilet is worth a mention too, lovely and clean decor inside with walls papered with the pages of a Charles Dickens book coated in varnish! What a great use of a boring Dickens novel! (You may think I'm a heathen but have you actually read one? Heavy going!

Amazing little deli with fresh bakes run by great people, based in a wonderful location. Stocked with fantastic produce from local artisan producers. It's always a pleasure to drop off and grab a coffee. I look forward to my visits.
